He followed the beads of rain running down the windowpane and tried to recall the last time he'd been out in it. Time had lost all meaning since he'd lost his soul. Put in a cage and left to rot.
A part of him regretted killing the others now if only because of how it turned out- for him. He doubted Cordy would have left him here. Strangely, Buffy had refused to resoul him- or stake him. Second time around, he'd done too much to be forgiven...but not enough to be dust...yet this punishment far exceeded the sharp end of a well-aimed stake.
He wondered how long it would take him to starve -to actually 'die'. He'd heard in the far past of rare instances where vampires were tortured by vengeful humans, eventually turning into empty husks that slowly and painfully crumbled to dust. Already his clothes hung on his over lean frame pathetically, and the burn of hunger had faded long ago.
"You done with the pity party yet?" His dark head shot up as the familiar voice washed over him like a soothing balm.
"The pity party left a long time ago, sweets," his fire rekindled for a moment as he approached the bars. It wasn't possible. He'd killed her along with the others. Fair enough, her death hadn't been immediate, but by the end, she'd begged for release.
"You're not real, are you?" Angelus had been waiting for madness to take over, and wasn’t all that surprised she was the first he imagined.
"Oh... I'm pretty real- well, in a none-corporeal kinda way." it was then he noticed the soft glow around her and took a step back.
"Why are you here?" his words a quiet whisper. Her lovely mouth pursed for a moment, then she raised her eyes to his and took a breath.
"I've come to collect something" her words just as soft as his
"What? Revenge?" he laughed and it was a hollow sound. "Too late, babes, been there, done that."
"No....not revenge." she moved nearer to the cage until her hands gripped the bars. "Something was... different this time you lost your soul." she paused and swallowed. "You didn't." his spine tightened and he moved until only the bars separated them.
"What do you see in front of you?" he sneered into her face and lifted his hands. "These had no place with the soul when I made you scream and whimper." her eyes dropped to them for a moment and she swallowed.
"Yes, the demon played with me; granted." then her eyes locked with his, "but the soul wasn't gone- it was just tucked away." stepping back she smiled the softest smile.
"And now, it's time to take it." sliding her hand into her pocket, she pulled out a stake. Angelus looked at it longingly; almost praying to a God he had turned his back on long ago when she threw it into the cage.
"Goodbye Angelus," she whispered, and for a moment, he swore her eyes shimmered with tears. After what he’d done to her, they had no place in her heart. With a familiar smirk, he picked up the stake and rammed it home.
As the dust fell, glowing light drifted up and Cordelia held out her hand. a male one formed and reached out, long pale fingers entwining with hers.
"Welcome home." the tears held back fell and both shimmering figures faded away until the room darkened and was forgotten by all.
